Home Visit
Fee-for-Service:

I will come to your home to:

Check you and the baby (vitals and fetal heart tones)
Let you know where you are in labor (vaginal exam)
See if your membranes have ruptured (with nitrazine paper)

Consultations extra.
Monitrice Services*
all of the above Doula Services PLUS

Home visit to see if you're in labor (including vaginal exams)
Home visit to see if your membranes have ruptured (with nitrazine paper)
Once you're in labor, I remain with you (or near if you're very early) and begin working with you as if you were a homebirth client. I monitor and chart your vitals and the baby's heart rate as required by law or as needed for your and the baby's safety. When we move to the hospital, I share the information with your nurse and doctor (with your permission), so they are aware that you've been well-taken care of and both of you monitored before you arrive.
Together, we work out the details about when you want to go to the hospital. For some women, it's a certain dilation, for others, it is when they feel they are ready for an epidural. You decide when to go in... unless there is a medical reason to go in earlier or if I see you are getting close to pushing.

NOTE: It is extremely important to me that you get to the hospital in enough time to deliver your baby. I will not, under any circumstances, keep you at home longer than you want (or need) and only in the case of an extremely precipitous birth, would I deliver the baby at home. While I have a "Precip Pack" in case of delivery, I will not have the proper equipment and medications for a planned homebirth. If you want a homebirth, I can refer you to midwives in the area. Even if you have a precipitous delivery, depending on the situation, EMS might be called or I will pack you all up in the car and we'll head to the hospital.

I cannot accept clients who might want a homebirth and want to decide once they are in labor.
I am no longer doing homebirths.

What if an emergency arises at home?

I provide much more than the basic knowledge and experience most doulas offer. Because I am a Licensed & Certified Professional Midwife with almost three decades of witnessing, assisting and attending almost 900 births, I'm able to recognize and react to the plethora of emergencies that can arise during labor. I'm able to detect and correct the problem or get you and the baby to the hospital quickly, whether that is in your car or, in the case of an extreme emergency, via EMS.

If 911 is called, I'm able to communicate effectively with the EMTs and with Labor & Delivery, using proper medical terms and explaining the situation in detail. Being clear helps the hospital staff be ready for your specific emergency.

Since I am so familiar with labor and birth, I can quickly recognize when things move out of the realm of normal. I do not wait to do something about a problem until the situation is critical, but know that early action can save a life. Because we're out of the hospital, that early detection is crucial and getting you and the baby to safety are an absolute priority of mine. I am also certified in Neonatal Resuscitation and have my CPR certificate as well.

I have first-hand knowledge and experience with the following situations and emergencies:

children at labor and birth
maternal anxiety
paternal anxiety
grandparent anxiety
VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean)
VBAmC (Vaginal Birth After Multiple Cesareans)
meconium
umbilical cord prolapse
placental abruption
fetal distress
surprise breech
twins
tight nuchal cords (cord around the neck)
shoulder dystocia
maternal hemorrhage
neonatal rescucitation

If you don't see your concern on this list, be sure to ask.
